Borrego Update: Don't Expect Charges Soon

I had a thought over the weekend. Let's say you walk into a retail store and steal something, like a pair of sneakers or a pair of jeans. There's a good chance you're going to get arrested, charged and booked, if you're caught.

But if you allegedly steal 3.3 million dollars from tax payers, it takes a little longer than that. It takes months. So far former district business manager Kathy Borrego has not been booked or charged even though a state audit says she took 3.3 million dollars by writing out more than 500 district checks to herself.

According to the District Attorney in Santa Fe County, there still needs to be "much more investigating" on the huge embezzlement case involving Jemez Mountain Schools.

Last week District Attorney Angela R. "Spence" Pacheco told me there is still a huge amount of paper work (evidence) that needs to be looked at and documented. She said "thousands of pages." Pacheco couldn't say when charges could be filed. From her conversation with me I got the sense it will be quite a while even before the case can be presented to a grand jury.

What is happening with this case? She has not been held accountable for 6 months! It's an injustice that the kids of our district have suffered because of Kathy. She needs to be accountable and arrested. I hope Mr. Jojola stays on top of this story and doesn't forget us. We may be a small school district but we are still entitled to justice. Please don't forget about us! Sincerely, A parent, taxpayer and alumni of Jemez Mountain School District.
